CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

“That shines a new light on things,” Ben said, watching as each of the team evaluated the information. “So, the man dies in Alice’s bedroom and falls against the door. Alice comes home, has a heart attack on the stairs, and falls against the door on the other side.”

“So, who killed the man?” Nillson asked. “Are we sure it wasn’t Alice?”

“Quite,” Freya said. “There is no blood spatter on her arms, but there is some on the walls. She couldn’t have made those injuries and escaped without getting some blood on her. Nobody could.”

“How about if Tammy did it?” Gold said. “She did steal the envelopes, after all.”

“My window cleaner costs me around fifteen quid a month,” Nillson said. “Hardly worth murdering an old lady over, is it?”

“Fair point,” Freya said. “Chapman, I asked you to take a look into Tammy Plant and George Benson. What did you find?”

“Not much to write home about, if I’m honest,” she replied. “No historical offences. Parents Jan and Mark Plant live in Boothby Grafoe, but then, Jackie has already made contact with the mother so it’s not really newsworthy. The only thing of real interest is her hairdressing business, which according to Companies House isn’t turning over very much at all. Without her being an official suspect, and without a warrant, I can’t officially access her financials. But if the business is her only source of income, then I think it’s safe to say she could very well be in some kind of financial difficulty.”

“Parents in Boothby Grafoe?” Ben asked. “Expensive area.”

“Just because they live in an expensive area, it doesn’t mean she’s living on the bank of Mum and Dad, Ben,” Freya replied.

“You’re right, it doesn’t,” Ben agreed. “But it does make you wonder if she uses her position to aid certain people who might have a mutual interest in making money on the side, doesn’t it?”

Ben had always enjoyed watching Freya’s expression change when either he or somebody else raised an idea or perspective that she hadn’t thought of. When they’d first met, the irritation in these moments had been clear on her face, and she would either resist the idea or somehow manoeuvre the theory to become her own. But those days were coming to an end. Freya was becoming one of them, and she enjoyed their successes as much as her own.

“I worked on an investigation in London,” she said finally. “Two women would go door to door selling insurance for some tin-pot firm, but they weren’t really interested in making any sales. They were eyeing up victims, identifying easy and worthwhile targets.”

“That’s a bit of a leap, boss,” Gillespie said. “Even by our standards.”

“It’s plausible, Jim,” Ben said. “Chapman, can you find out how much debt she’s in, if any?”

“I just need a warrant,” she replied. “Will Detective Superintendent Granger authorise it?”

“Tammy Plant is in possession of missing items from Alice Glass’s house,” Freya said. “She discovered the body, and, as weak as it sounds, there was no way on earth Alice Glass needed a haircut.
